'09A glance at some new foreign beers
Today we take a look at new beers around the world. No wonder we must start our survey in the States, where brewers can’t stand twiddling their thumbs. Garret Oliver, head brewer at Brooklyn Brewery, announced his new venture: Manhattan Project, which must be regarded as the link between cocktails and beer. Since some years ago David Wondrich revealed to Oliver the original Manhattan recipe, with rye whisky instead of bourbon, it became his favourite cocktail and now he decided to produce a beer that resembles it.
Manhattan Project will be a strong rye beer, brewed with several herbs and spices, such as orange and lemon peel, gentian, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and cloves, and then aged in whisky barrels. Since it was quite a simple beer with only some spices in
, he decided to add even black cherries, just to add some complexity… Intended as an appetizer beer, it should match with game as well, in particular with ducks.
Two new beers for Left Hand: Fade to Black and Warrior IPA. The former is an 8% ABV foreign/export stout; the latter not the umpteenth experimental single hop beer since it is brewed with Golding as well, used in dry-hopping.
Hair of the Dog, another brilliant and renowned American brewery, announced its Micheal: a Flemish Ale named after Micheal Jackson. Brewed in January 2007, has been aged in durmast and sherry barrels.
It’s Christmas time so we can’t miss the new Christmas Ale from Hoppin’ Frog: Frosted Frog Christmas Ale, an 8,6% ABV beer brewed with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.
Before leaving the States heading Europe, we report the news that New Belgium, the third American craft brewery, introduced new artwork for labels. Just the name of the beer in capital letters and a sketch, in countertendency with the appealing fashion of labels of last years.
Concerning Europe there are three brand new Dark Horizon series beer from Nøgne Ø: Dark Horizon 3rd Edition, with marked licorice notes, Red Horizon, brewed with sake yeast, a fruity 18%ABV ale, and the “lighter” Sweet Horizon, a sweet 14%ABV ale.
A last nice news from Brasserie du Val Dieu that brewed Biere de Rouches, the official beer of the Belgian football team Standard Liegi. For tasting notes (in Italian) see the In.Byrreria blog.
