'09Revelation Cat: a new brewery on the outskirts of Rome
Rome is such a peculiar market for beer: probably the one where you can drink at best, due to some selected pubs and despite the fact that the number of breweries within the urban territory is quite small. Considering this, every beer lover in Rome and surrondings can’t remain indifferent to the news that in few months a new craft beer producer will open its doors. The name is enigmatic, Revelation Cat, we are glad to reveal some juicy details about it…
Let’s start with the guy behind this new brewery, a name that should sound already familiar to the beer connoisseurs in Rome. I’m talking about Alex Liberati, owner of Brasserie 4:20, a pub that in a few years it has attracted all the fans because of its beauty and thanks to an amazing selection of beers on tap and in bottles. After the successful experience with 4:20, Alex has now decided to jump into production with his personal brewery.
Revelation Cat will open next year between Rome and Pomezia, in via Laurentina 2090, and although it is still under construction, it is already possible to pay a visit. Ironically the brewery will rise from the ashes of a former factory of the ’40s wich used to produce wine in a natural park set along one of the most relevant main roads in the south of Rome. The available space is huge: 7,000 square meters of green spaces that will host events for Beer, ample parking, lots of tables, areas for barbeques and even a camp with 20 tents, showers and electricity. Inside a local bar with lots of draughts from around the world. A huge project, therefore, that can make the day of all beer lovers.
The production part seems already set to two directives: originality and collaboration, where the first is brought by the Woodwork Series, produced in Belgium at the brewery De Proef. The idea is very simple but innovative: to experience the effect of different woods in the maturation of beer, starting from a single base product. The base is a Strong single mart and single hop IPA, made with Munich malt and Nelson Sauvin (hops from New Zealand that many producers are recently fell in love with), very dry, with an alcohol content of 11% alc. This IPA is then aged in brand new oak barrels assembled in Sicily and never used before, which differ in the type of wood: French oak, American oak and acacia. The result is bottled in bottles of 37,5 cl, a size especially designed for a multiple tasting. I have heard words of praise from those who had the opportunity to try it.
Regarding the collaboration, Revelation Cat is willing to produce a range of beers along with some Italian and international brewers of great value. The first products are already on schedule: a Scotch Ale matured in casks of Bruchladdich whiskey (which were originally used for Port) with Steve Dawson of White Dog brewery in Modena. A Cream Ale inspired by the pre-prohibition America with Mikkel of Mikkeller (Denmark). A Light IPA brewed by De Prael brewery in the heart of the red-light district of Amsterdam.
Along with original productions the Revelation Cat will also brew traditional beers, and of course the production methods and ingredients will be of the highest level, for a clean production, innovative and exciting. The brewer will be Marco Meneghin, now transplanted from Milan to Rome, that some of you might know and who joined me in the homebrewer laboratoires during the latest Italian Beer Festival in Rome.
The official introduction of the project was held during the recent Danish Beer Festival, one of the most important brewing events in Europe, now reached its ninth edition. The beers presented got some excellent feedback from visitors and good scores on RateBeer.
So we’ll just have to wait the opening of Revelation Cat, of course I will keep you updated. Good luck to Alex for his new adventure!
