'09Craft beer in Italy: latest news
Ok, these are not properly hot news, but the idea is to summarize some events that have characterized the national beer scene in recent months. Let’s start then by the opening of a new brewpub, located in Valle d’Aosta and more precisely in Grande Charrière town, close to Saint Christophe (AO). The place, called Birrificio Aosta, was inaugurated on August 7th and it’s the first microbrewery in the small region of northern Italy.
The production already boasts a large range of styles: APA – Aosta Pale Ale, Mon Blanche (Blanche), Excalibeer (Bitter), Jured (Amber Ale) and Loiren (Weizen). As told by MySobry, behind the project there are two former homebrewer, Fulvio and Mauro, who have decided to make the big jump like many of their italian coleagues. The brewpub is very large: there are over 100 seats and a production area with a capacity of 5hl.
From Romagnaoggi newspaper we learned instead than in the province of Ravenna has arisen the new Birrificio Valsenio. Located in the village of Casola Valsenio (near Baffadi town), the company opened its doors officially on September 3rd, thanks to funding received from the Sviluppo Italia project. Unfortunately we did not find much information on this brewery, except that the logo and the graphic image of the labels are marked by a strong territorial identification.
After two breweries that are born, one that grows. As reported by Cuneo Cronaca, in fact, the brewery Citabiunda was enhanced with the opening of a restaurant, located above the production plant. The idea of Bir’ostu (the name of the restaurant) is a direct evolution of special evenings with theme dinners promoted in recent months by the company. The inspiration is always the same: dishes made with beer alongside other culinary traditions of the Langa, all offered in conjunction with Citabiunda beers or local wines. The chef will be Luca Cerato, already involved in the theme nights that I mentioned.
Then let’s speak about Birrificio Lodigiano, which is currently involved in an educational project related to the school of Agricultural Villa Igea. As reported by Il Giorno, here the students can approach the art of brewing in several ways. Above an internship at the brewery, which was attended by 3 students, one of the farm land have been planted with several subspecies of barley. First bottles labeled Villa Igea will be ready in 2010. The teaching plan is also provided for topics such as marketing beer and alcohol prevention.
We conclude this post with the scoop of the blog Aizercast, which has identified some new beers from Grado Plato. Or better, the connection with the brewery of Chieri (TO) is only about the plant production, because these are not official beers of the brewery. The labels show vintage-style illustration of a pin-up waitress, while the beers are characterized by feminine names, such as Lolita. To learn more, you can refer you to the concerning post.
