Mikkeller is a renowned Danish brewer, and probably you’ve come across their beers. I’m thinking particularly to the Single Hop Series. This is a controversial project, with beers brewed adding only one kind of hop, in order to assess and appreciate its features at its best. Obviously it is also possible to compare two or more beers in the series to discover the differences between the varieties of hops.

'10Bad Attitude: the first canned “Italian” craft beer
In the craft area at the recent Pianeta Birra fair held in Rimini, there was a big yellow stand, furnished in an original way (there was even an area for live music) with a name never heard before: Bad Attitude. I did not realize it was a brave new craft beer venture and like many others, I didn’t care about them since Manuele Colonna pointed me out that at the stand there was Lorenzo Bottoni - old acquaintance of mine related to Piccolo Birrificio di Apricale – and that detail was enough to draw my attention. I never imagined that I was going to discover the most interesting news of the whole event.

'10The penguins, Otto Von Bismarck and the regressive beer
The BBC web-site has published the news that the Scottish brewer Brewdog has brewed the most alcoholic beer in the world.”What’s new?!” you would think, since the Tactical Nuclear Penguin project become public several weeks ago. Right? Wrong, because the beer we’re talking about is not the penguin’s, but a new production, brewed to allow Brewdog to reclaim the title of most alcoholic brewery in the universe. What has happened? Let’s try to sum up this depressing story…

'10New Italian beers at the turn of 2010
From time to time I love to publish a post about new Italian beers! Let’s start with something completely new, coming from Birra Amiata. It’s called Gincana, a name which is the union of the two special ingredients with which is brewed: ginepro (juniper) and canapa (hemp). The recipe provides the use of malted barley, wheat and hops, as well as hemp leaves (no THC of course) and Maremma juniper berries.

'10New international beers
As happens from time to time we take a look at the new beers that will soon invade (or have recently invaded) the international market. Let’s start with one of the latest news, which comes directly from the blog Thirsty Pilgrim. It seems that the Belgian Dupont will introduce, in the next April, a special dry-hopped version of its renowned Saison. In broad outline dry-hopping technique is to add fresh hops directly during fermentation. Will be produced once a year and the availability will be quite limited: they will produce only about 250 kegs and 300 to 500 magnum size bottles. Sounds like an interesting variation on the theme for all those who love this beer. But it will takes a lot of luck to have the chance to sample it.

'09Some brand new Italian Christmas beers (but not only)
After a few days we’re back on new Italian beers that are popping up like mushrooms in the last period, especially with Christmas just around the corner. However, we will not only deal with seasonal specialties, since some should already begin to be saturated with Christmas beer. However, we can’t but begin from these productions…
Let’s start then with the 2009 version of the Birra di Natale (literally “Christmas Beer”) of Maltus Faber. Introduced in early November, is a Belgian Amber Ale, 8% ABV, available in 75cl and in Magnum 150cl bottles.

'09Enyò 2009 e BB Evò: new beers from Birra Boero and Barley
Birra Boero announced the version 2009 of their Enyò. This beer, created for the first time two years ago, it is born from a brilliant solidarity project for the supporting of the inhabitants of Togo villages. The whole income will be devolved to the Onlus Mama Africa, that developes a series of solidarity micro-projects since 2005, concerning surgeries, schooling, cultural activities, subsidies to agricultural enterprises, thanks to the volunteering experience of Prof. Enzo Liguoro.

'09Beer news from B94, Gilac, Maltus Faber and Beba breweries
It’s getting easier to keep oneself up-to-date to Italian beer news, thanks to breweries’ press offices and so many passionate beer bloggers all over the peninsula.
Something is happening in south-Italy, where many breweries opened in the last couple of year. B94, set up almost two years ago in Apulia, near Lecce, presented two new beers, in addition to the three they keep producing since their first appearance.

'09A glance at some new foreign beers
Today we take a look at new beers around the world. No wonder we must start our survey in the States, where brewers can’t stand twiddling their thumbs. Garret Oliver, head brewer at Brooklyn Brewery, announced his new venture: Manhattan Project, which must be regarded as the link between cocktails and beer. Since some years ago David Wondrich revealed to Oliver the original Manhattan recipe, with rye whisky instead of bourbon, it became his favourite cocktail and now he decided to produce a beer that resembles it.

'09New beers from Birrificio Italiano, Birrificio Torino and Birranova brewery
After the interesting debut of Musa Estate (litterally “Muse of summer”) from Birrificio Italiano, of which I wrote about at the end of August, the brewer Agostino Arioli has created a new beer of this special line. As I explained at that time, in fact, every season has its specific Musa and now, after the summer version, it’s time for Musa Autunno. These productions are very special, because they are produced by the filtrate of a previous mash without subsequent boiling, to which are added special ingredients. If Muse Estate was produced with lemons of the Amalfi Coast, for the autumn edition Nebbiolo grapes are used.
