Grapehops: from the US to Piedmont for craft beer!

Last April the Italian blog Birrazen (thank you for your support guys), devoted to craft beer of Piedmont, interviewed Shannon and Kim, who created the website and had the idea of the trip. Introducing Matteo Milan, Brewdog Italian former brewer

Perhaps not everyone knows that a small slice of the incredible success of Brewdog is due to a young Italian, Matteo Milan, who until a few months ago worked in a permanent position at the Scottish plant. After this experience, lasted a year and a half, now Matteo is back in Italy to become part of the staff of Birrificio del Ducato. I asked him some questions about his Scot adventure, trying to discover the secrets of Brewdog from an insider.

There’s a revolution going on regarding craft beer in Brazil which we are not very aware of, proportionally comparable to the Italian movement. Luckily, I had the privilege to be informed about it with great details by the star of this interview. Roberto Fonseca is a Brazilian journalist who writes for O Estado, the third newspaper in the nation, and a huge lover of craft beer. Last September he was in Italy to visit some of our breweries with the aim to know our beer culture, as we shall see, shows many resemblances to the Brazilian movement.

Interview with Mike Murphy

mike4In the early 2000s, the young craft beer scene of Rome was shocked by the introduction of the beers brewed by an american who moved to Italy: Mike Murphy. Immediately, Mike became famous all over the country because of his innovative products, directly descending from the beer traditions of USA. Starbess, the pub for which he created his beers, became the first “urban” brewpub of Rome, as well as a place of pilgrimage for a lot of beer-lovers. Many people may still remember his fabulous Pioneer pale ale, while some still today keeps in their wine cellar one or two bottles of his barley wine Maelstrom (which is really fantastic). Nowadays Mike works in Denmark for the GourmetBryggeriet brewery, a big company, which is quoted in the Stock Exchange. However, sometimes he returns to Italy, where – as we will see – he left a piece of his heart…
