'09Silver medal for Birrificio del Ducato at Stockholm Beer Festival
Months pass and Birrificio del Ducato continues to collect accolades around the world. In the past I have written about the gold medal at the European Beer Star with Verdi Imperial Stout and the inclusion of Nuova Mattina (the American version of New Morning) among the 25 best beers of 2008 according with Draft Magazine. This last beer returns in the spotlight, as it won the silver medal in its category at the recent Stockholm Beer Festival.
This swedish event is very huge and this year was held in two tranches in the second week of September, hosting 1.500 products including beer, whiskey and calvados. As for our favorite drink, brewers from around the world attended the Stockholm Beer Festival, including Italy. Along with the event held a contest that, in the style of other similar events, decrees the top three beers in a number of different types. Unlike the solution adopted by GABF for example, which identifies a large variety of well-defined styles, here the categories are more blurred, but low in numbers.
As I’ve written in the introduction, the New Morning got a second place among the Belgian-style ales (alcohol between 4.8% and 5.9%), beated only by Rodenbach; just below was voted Rogge from Struise. In the list of all medals awarded, you will meet many local producers, but also many famous foreign breweries. For example repeatedly return names like Mikkeller (Denmark), Nøgne Ø (Norway), Struise (Belgium), Harviestoun (Scotland) as well as several U.S. companies (Sierra Nevada, Flying Dog, Samuel Adams).
So congratulations to Giovanni Campari and the whole staff of Birrificio del Ducato for this new accolade, which shows that Italian products are slowly proving themselves even in international competitions. Keep it up!
