'10Italy leading the International Beer Challenge
The International Beer Challenge is one of the most important competitions on beer, at its fourteenth edition. It stands out for the prestige of the judges involved: in addition to Jeff Evans, chief judge, we find famous names (Pete Brown, Ron Pattison), including Italians Stefano Cossi and Matteo Milan. Today we comment upon the outcome of the contest. They smile on Italian breweries.
Among the 24 gold medals awarded, Italy won six. Two each for Toccalmatto and Birrificio del Ducato , one each for Valscura and Doppio Malto. Italian gold awarded beers are: Sibilla and Surfing Hop (Toccalmatto), Black Jack VIS and Sally Brown “Baracco” (Ducato), PassionAle (Valscura), and Mahogany IPA (Doppio Malto). A great satisfaction for our colours, with the brilliant Emilia Romagna (4 gold medals).
Italian breweries often appear among silver and bronze medals. Among the former are ReAle Extra and Keto Reporter (Birra del Borgo), Winterlude and Verdi Imperial Stout (Ducato) Turbacci Black (Turbacci) Durgnes (Birra di Meni). Bronze for ReAle (Birra del Borgo), Fumé de Sanglier (Toccalmatto), Chimera (Ducato), Turbacci Quinn and Turbacci Strong Ale (Turbacci), Levante (Statalenove) Zingibeer (Doppio Malto), Pirinat (Birra di Meni) and Menabrea 1846 (Menabrea).
Among the winners a lot of renowned foreign breweries such as Samuel Adams, Harviestoun, Thornbridge, Weihenstephan, Kelburn, Baltika, Fuller’s, Moor, etc..
The competition also awarded prizes for the packaging and design. Among Italian beers Turbacci Black (Turbacci) and Karnera (Cittavecchia) were bronze awarded, Pirinat (Birra di Meni), Cassisona and Tipopils (Birrificio Italiano) won the gold medal.
For the results see the Jeff Evans web-site or the competition’s. Congratulations to Italian brewers that have shown the value of the Italian brewing movement in an international context. And congratulations to Lorenzo Fortini, who collected and conveyed Italian beers. By the way, in case you were wondering, the Italian beers were 43, from 11 different breweries.
