More or less curious news from abroad

132352-Vortex-bottleLike other fields, even the beer scenario often offers strange or involuntarily out of mind news. Today we look at the most interesting news, but do not expect to find particularly serious matters. Just five fast reports, which despite their levity, could be exciting topics of discussion. We start then from the United States…

  • Yesterday we mentioned the week of American Craft Beer, happening in these days.Well, from Beernews we learn that the New Belgium, one of the largest brewers in the country, has created a beer on this occasion in collaboration with two other U.S. brewers: Odell and Coopersmith’s. Is called Collaboration Kriek and it’s a blend of Odell Saboteur (15%) New Belgium La Folie (45%) and Coopersmith’s Kriek. I would say that these collaborations between brewers are becoming quite creepy…
  • Beernews again told us that the German Schorschbräu have once again regained the supremacy in the most alcoholic beer in the world challenge, surpassing Scottish Brewdog again with a 43.38% ABV version of Schorschbock. So the boring race between the two brewers continues and it seems that the Brewdog guys have met their match: in fact Germans have begun to align to Scots’ irreverent commercials, with messages like “Schorschbock 43%, ’cause Frankonian Men don’t dress like girls”. The truth is that the story really starts to bother and one could start thinking that there is more complicity than rivalry between the two protagonists. The news is peppered with even more curious revelations, which I avoid to report.
  • Czech Republic will host the elections at the end of the month. What beer has to do with it? You should know that the microbrewery Bernard – quite known and popular at home – decided to donate a keg to the first 250 schools whose students will commit to vote, regardless of the party they will choose. Same thing for the university students, each of which will receive 12 bottles of beer. Besides a purely commercial reason, behind the Czech brewer promotion there is also a political choice: the owner has never hidden his conservative ideas and the younger population have the same political orientation, but usually do not go to polls. Many controversies followed this announcement, inevitable even in the country with the highest per capita consumption of beer in the world.
  • I was not aware that there are auctions that include aged or very rare beers. A few days ago the auction at Liquid Solutions site was primarily focused on a very special version of the Hair of the Dog Dave, awarded for the paltry sum of $ 1,571 to the user MadMitch76. It is a 375 ml bottle so that factors out to $4.19 per 1 ml. Ok Mitch, nice catch … I guess that “Mad” is there for some good reason.
  • In the past we have already seen how beer companies are trying to find new ideas to counter the decline in consumption, in contrast to the craft segment. Well, after seeing the latest Miller’s idea I think is normal to think they’re arrived quite near the end. The revolutionary invention is the Vortex Bottle, a bottle that actually creates a “vortex” as the beer is poured, thanks to some grooves in the neck itself. The rotary movement should enhance the flavor and aroma (supposing that there are some) of Miller Lite!
