Beer, summer, plastic and glass

Freedom BottleIn summer, you know, beer consumption is growing dramatically: combat the heat with a glass of our favorite drink is one of the most enjoyable practice we can allow ourselves. Unfortunately we have learned that with the summer sick deliberations of the various Italian towns came along, which in the name of a blind Neo-Prohibitionism make increasingly difficult to enjoy a beer outdoors. Apart from the excesses of the “takeaway in all its forms” ban, the situation is mostly bad for glass, banned as summer came in.

As easily expected, the number of regulations have had serious consequences for those working in the sector, so that the multinationals have decided to take measures. The solution? Sell it in plastic bottles! The first example of this occurred in June, when Ceres has launched its new Freedom Bottle (Beverfood source), a name that leaves no room for doubt.

The press release further clarifies the reasons for this change:

Freedom Bottle stems from the desire to maintain these pleasant habits that are part of our lives and experiences, adding something special to a drink with friends. Where the consumption of beverages in glass is not allowed, in fact, the new Freedom Bottle offers the opportunity to continue the experience of drinking from the bottle.

bavaria pet04met condensThey’re not alone, since in early July (Beverfood source again) Dutch Bavaria had a similar initiative. Their PET bottle was launched at the Rimini event Riviera On Air, where the public was forbidden to drink from glass bottles. And the reference to the glass ban is clear in their press release too:

Unique in the market, unbreakable, hygienic, light, comfortable, practical, 33cl PET bottle is designed precisely for consumption outdoors even where the use of glass is forbidden. Moreover, its ring pull cap makes it particularly suitable and ideal for beach or swimming pool parties, picnics, etc..

So this summer get prepared to be invaded not only by plastic cups, but also from PET bottles. A material not that suitable for maintaining a quality drink, but of course this is not a problem for the industrial beers …

But there are even those who do not want to wait a multinational to find the solution and prefer to make their own. You could find a tutorial on Youtube explaining how to perfectly disguise a beer can to evade the controls. The secret? Cover it with another tin coating, from some soft drink. For details please look at the clip below.

We quoted earlier one of the many public summer events, where often the problem is the accumulation of cups and cans. Well, a very interesting initiative comes from England, where at some rock concerts the Reusable cup system was launched. Is to serve beer only in plastic cups (thereby avoiding cans and glass bottles), asking for a small security fee. After finishing the first beer you should return the glass and have you fee back, or – much more interesting option – ask for another beer served in the same glass.

For the same problem in Rome we are satisfied with six “glass-eaters machines” . Better than nothing …
