'10The inauguration of Domus Birrae in Rome
In the past week was held the baptism of Domus Birrae, the new landmark for craft beer in Rome. The project was rumored for some time now, although the involved characters have managed to maintain a certain reserve on the details. Not that easy, let’s face it, given the scale of this adventure involving prestigious names. The most grandiose is Manuele Colonna, but many Italian beer passionate know the others as well: Luca Chen, Aleandro and Luca “the camel”, a important part of the Ma che siete venuti a fà and bir&fud, from which this new beershop directly stems.
Is not correct to define Domus Birrae just a beershop, besides the fact that in this period many open in Rome. This for at least three reasons: the presence of a homebrewing corner, the sale of many food items and the organization of beer themed events. I will return on these issues later. Let’s start from basic information. Domus Birrae is in Via Cavour 88, opposite Esquilino Square. A central and prestigious premise, which will surely attract many foreigners as well. The shop is open until 21.00.
A very roomy premises with several halls, with the beer always in the limelight. For what concern the beer, the offer is very focused on Italian brews, so that foreign products are reduced to lowest terms but distinguished by the excellent quality (De Dolle, Beer Here, Struise, etc.). The idea is to offer at least one brewery for every Italian region: so close to established and renowned producers you can find interesting news, as the Aosta brewery.
The selection of Italian beers is impressive, both for quantity and quality.Just a few names: Montegioco, Loverbeer, Lambrate, B94, Maltus Faber, Toccalmatto, Amiata, Grado Plato, Pasturana, Cittavecchia, Opperbacco, Birra del Borgo, Turan, Almond, Karma, etc.. An endless list, in which one should lost himself for hours discovering gems. If you love craft beer and especially the Italian one, you’ll want to take up residence at Domus Birrae.
Let’s talk about homebrewing. As I mentioned, the beershop is also the first store in Rome specialized in the sale of equipment for the production of homemade beer. A large corner of the premises is in fact intended to sell kits, ingredients and accessories: a paradise for all homebrewers.
Moreover, homebrewing is not just a sideline of Domus Birrae, which instead aims to be a reference point for those who cultivate this passion. The events will be held at a fixed date in the beershop are in fact designed as meetings between professional brewers and homebrewers, during which the firsts will reveal their secrets and taste the beers of the latter.
Another corner of Domus Birrae is dedicated to selling quality food products, like pasta, jams, honey, vegetables and tomato sauce. Finally, around the premises you can find other beer items, such as glasses, books, accessories, and the now legendary Ma che siete venuti a fà T-shirts.
During the inauguration I also sneaked in a large warehouse basement, which hopefully will become the future site of “some interesting situations”, to quote Colonna. A little left to say but that this is a place of perdition for every beer geek. Good luck to the boys of Domus Birrae!
