Italy among the stars of the EBS 2010

ebs1After the great success of Grado Plato’s Chocarrubica at the recent Mondial de la Bière, another international competition prized Italian brewing scenario. Italy cornered medals at the European Beer Star, one of the most important craft beer competitions in the world. A total of seven placings for Italian beers: two gold medals, three silver and two bronze, for a loot unimaginable until a few years ago. The first success was in fact only one in 2008, with the gold of the Birrificio del Ducato of Verdi Imperial Stout , which was followed by three medals in 2009. Although last year Italy did not get a gold, I interpreted the increase in total placing as a sign of growth of the Italian movement, growth that is strongly supported by the results of the 2010 edition of this competition.

New Italian beers at the turn of 2010

amiataFrom time to time I love to publish a post about new Italian beers! Let’s start with something completely new, coming from Birra Amiata. It’s called Gincana, a name which is the union of the two special ingredients with which is brewed: ginepro (juniper) and canapa (hemp). The recipe provides the use of malted barley, wheat and hops, as well as hemp leaves (no THC of course) and Maremma juniper berries.

Some brand new Italian Christmas beers (but not only)

birra-natale-maltus-faberAfter a few days we’re back on new Italian beers that are popping up like mushrooms in the last period, especially with Christmas just around the corner. However, we will not only deal with seasonal specialties, since some should already begin to be saturated with Christmas beer. However, we can’t but begin from these productions…

Let’s start then with the 2009 version of the Birra di Natale (literally “Christmas Beer”) of Maltus Faber. Introduced in early November, is a Belgian Amber Ale, 8% ABV, available in 75cl and in Magnum 150cl bottles.

A leading role for Italy @ European Beer Stars

ebs1The awarding ceremony of the 2009 edition of European Beer Star took place yesterday in Germany, one of the most important contests in the world for craft beer. As in other contests of this kind, all the participants beers – 836 this year, coming from 30 different countries – are divided in categories. For each of them the three most deserving productions are awarded a prize. The contest shows a growing tendency: this year were present 78 judges to vote 41 different typologies of beer. The beers have been 30% more in comparison with 2008, with a very varied provenance: from Australia to Panama, from Russia to Thailand, from Brazil to USA.

New beers from Birrificio Italiano, Birrificio Torino and Birranova brewery

birrificio-italianoAfter the interesting debut of Musa Estate (litterally “Muse of summer”) from Birrificio Italiano, of which I wrote about at the end of August, the brewer Agostino Arioli has created a new beer of this special line. As I explained at that time, in fact, every season has its specific Musa and now, after the summer version, it’s time for Musa Autunno. These productions are very special, because they are produced by the filtrate of a previous mash without subsequent boiling, to which are added special ingredients. If Muse Estate was produced with lemons of the Amalfi Coast, for the autumn edition Nebbiolo grapes are used.

The Muse from Birrificio Italiano and Alma from Gilac

estate-300-x-226In today’s post we’re going to discover two new Italian beers, which are very special: Musa Estate (litterally Muse of Summer) from Birrificio Italiano and Alma form Gilac brewery. Referring to the first, in recent days the brewer Agostino Arioli has posted on his blog a very interesting post explaining the genesis and the production process that is behind this new creation. First of all, it is not a single new beer, but a completely new line, produced with a very peculiar method, called “second runnings”.
